Butler scores twice late in 3-1 road win at Johnson County

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Butler soccer remained undefeated in conference play and won its 14th consecutive game with a 3-1 road win at Johnson County on Wednesday.

With the score locked at 1-1, Colleen Howland and Katie Hartman scored goals in the final six minutes for Butler (14-2-0 overall, 9-0-0 conference).

Butler came into the contest with six straight shutouts and held opponents without a goal for 568 minutes. Johnson County stopped the streak when sophomore Joanna Taylor scored on a header off a free kick in the seventh minute.

Taylor's goal ended the Grizzlies' scoreless streak at 575 minutes, falling short of the school record by 58 minutes. The goal was also the Cavaliers' first goal against Butler since 2013, as the Grizzlies had won the previous six games by shutout against Johnson.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Grizzlies tied the game in the 58th minute when Kennedy Weaver scored on a loose ball in the 6-yard box.

Howland put Butler in front with just over six minutes to play when she rebounded a Taylor Martinez shot into the goal. Howland extended her consecutive point streak to 14 games and has scored 51 points (20 goals, 11 assists) during that span.

Hartman then added an insurance goal in the 87th minute on an assist from Sam Simmons

For the game, Butler outshot Johnson County 19-6 and had 13 corner kicks to the Cavaliers' two attempts.

Grizzly keeper Jami Reichenberger received the win, making five saves for her 14th win of the season.

Butler will next host Kansas City Kansas in Jayhawk Conference play on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Grizzlies previously defeated KCK 8-0 back on Sept. 23.

Butler will have an opportunity to set the school record for most consecutive home wins. The Grizzlies have won 20 straight home matches and have not lost at home since a 2-1 overtime loss to Hutchinson back on Oct. 17, 2014.

NOTES: Butler improved to 18-6-1 overall against Johnson County and has won 12 straight games against the Cavaliers...
