DeWerff, Palfrey score twice as No. 10 Butler shuts out Allen, 6-0

IOLA, Kan. — Grizzly forwards Zion DeWerff and Michelle Palfrey each scored two goals to help No. 10 Butler shut out Allen 6-0 on Saturday at the Red Devils Soccer Field.

With the victory, the Grizzlies (6-3 overall, 4-0 conference) tied a school record with 31 consecutive regular season conference wins, which matches the streak that ran from Oct. 14, 2011 to Oct. 12, 2014.

The game was called with 14:17 remaining in the contest due to lightning in the area. Instead of waiting out the delay, both coaches agreed to call the game.

DeWerff scored both of her goals in the opening half as Butler built a 3-0 lead at the break. Her first goal came just two minutes into the contest, getting a pass from Kennedy Weaver just inside the box and slotted the ball inside the right post.

Weaver then followed with a goal from the right side just five minutes later on an assist from Melonie Baca. The Weaver-to-DeWerff connection would strike again in the 19th minute, as DeWerff hit a one-touch goal on a center pass.

Butler wasted no time in the second half to extend the lead to 4-0, as Palfrey's first goal came less than a minute into the half on a Jordan Russell assist.

Alexis Palmer put the Grizzlies up 5-0 in the 54th minute when she scored on a corner kick that was also assisted by Russell.

Palfrey completed the scoring five minutes later, deking two defenders with a fake shot to the right, then hammering a left-footed shot from 20 yards out. The ball hit just under the crossbar and into the net for the final goal.

The Grizzlies dominated possession for most of the shortened contest and outshot Allen 21-4. Grizzly keeper Elena Garcia was credited with two saves and recorded her third shutout of the season.

Butler will next host Cowley this Friday in a Jayhawk Conference match. Kickoff from BG Products Veterans Sports Complex is at 2:00 p.m.

NOTES: Butler improves to 19-0-1 all-time against Allen. In games played in Iola, the Grizzlies are now 9-0-1.
