No. 18 Butler scores five second-half goals in win at Coffeyville
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — Butler soccer remained in a first-place tie atop the Jayhawk East standings after scoring five second-half goals in a 6-1 road conference victory at Coffeyville on Wednesday.

With just four conference games left, the 18th-ranked Grizzlies (9-4 overall, 7-1 conference) kept pace with Johnson County with a 7-1 league record in Jayhawk Conference play.

Butler led 1-0 at halftime on a Zion DeWerff goal in the  fourth minute, coming on a Kennedy Weaver assist. Weaver sent the ball into the 18' penalty area on a looping pass, which found DeWerff for an easy shot.

Freshman midfielder Erin Akin added a header on a corner kick just 5:16 into the second half, with Sam Simmons delivering the corner attempt.

Coffeyville's Harley Swindell netted the only goal for the Red Ravens after a defensive breakdown, which came only 45 seconds after Akin's header.

Butler's offense would get in sync late in the contest as they blitzed Coffeyville with four goals in a 14-minute span, beginning with Holly Stewart's goal in the 69th minute. Stewart punched in the goal after a few Grizzly attempts were denied by the Ravens' defense.

Just under two minutes later, freshman forward Aylin Torres put the Grizzlies up 4-1 by beating the keeper after a deflected shot off a Ravens defender came right back to Torres.

In the 82nd minute, Sam Simmons blasted a 35-yard free kick into the back of the net for a 5-1 Grizzly lead. Just over a minute later, Tiffany Butler then capped the scoring by dribbling through the Coffeyville defense in the penalty area and sliding a right-footed shot into the net.

Both Simmons and Stewart scored one goal and had one assist in the win for Butler, who outshot Coffeyville by a narrow 14-12 margin.

Butler will step out of conference play with a home game Friday against Otero, Colo. Kickoff from BG Products Veterans Sports Complex is at 11:00 a.m.

NOTES: Butler remains undefeated against Coffeyville with a 16-0-0 record all-time vs. the Red Ravens… After three one-goal margin victories to begin conference play, the Grizzlies have scored six goals or more in four of their last five games and are averaging five goals per game in that span...
