Butler soccer reaches 10 wins with 3-1 home win over Otero

Butler soccer picked up its 10th win of the season with a 3-1 home victory over Otero (CO) in non-conference play Friday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The 18th-ranked Grizzlies (10-4 overall, 7-1 conference) opened the contest with a Ky Kreemer goal from 15 yards out in the 36th minute. Kreemer got a pass from Holly Stewart, then slotted a ball past Otero goalkeeper Shelby Koether from the right side. Kreemer's goal was her team-high ninth of the season.

Butler only led 1-0 at halftime and trailed in the shot category (6-5) despite having a slight wind advantage for the first 45 minutes.

Two quick goals by the Grizzlies in the second half gave Butler a cushion lead over the Rattlers. Zion DeWerff put in an open-net goal in the 52nd minute that was assisted by Stewart, then Michelle Palfrey hammered a right-footed shot into the upper right corner moments later for a 3-0 lead.

Janae Reyes scored Otero's lone goal with just three seconds remaining.

Butler outshot Otero 19-10 for the game, including a 14-4 shot advantage in the second half. Sophomore keeper Elena Garcia improved to 10-4 overall, making seven saves in the win.

Butler returns to Jayhawk Conference action on Sunday in Chanute with a 3:00 p.m. road contest at Neosho County. With a win, the Grizzlies can move a half-game ahead of Johnson County in the Jayhawk East standings. The Cavaliers (9-3, 7-1) do not have a conference game until Thursday at Coffeyville.
