Butler drops second straight home game, falls to Johnson

Butler soccer suffered its second straight conference defeat Saturday night with a 2-1 home loss to Johnson County, who picked up its first win in El Dorado since 2007 - ending a seven-game losing streak to the Grizzlies.

Kayla Brashear scored a pair of second-half goals for Johnson, who handed Butler its second straight home conference loss for the first time in program history.

The 13th-ranked Grizzlies (8-4-1 overall, 4-3-1 conference) held a 1-0 lead at the break on an Alyssa Stewart goal in the 22nd minute.

Stewart's goal was set up by a throw-in from Hannah Becker from the near sideline. Becker threw forward to Stewart, who headed it over a defender to gain control, then weaved past two Cavalier defenders and kicked a right-footed shot from 25 yards out for her fifth goal of the season.

Brashear scored the equalizer just 17 seconds into the second half, as Butler lost possession after a couple touches. Brashear snuck in near midfield to steal the ball, then chipped it forward to Aina Blanch-Lopez. With a pair of dribbles, Blanch-Lopez played it ahead to Brashear, who took a one-touch crossing shot 20 yards out from the right side and inside the left post for the goal.

With just over 10 minutes to play, Brashear scored the game-winner from 22 yards out after a poor Butler defensive clearance. A header by the Grizzlies came right to Brashear, who fitted a one-time shot under the crossbar and over Butler keeper Angie Ojeda.

Johnson edged Butler 11-8 on shots, while the Grizzlies had a slim 2-1 advantage on corner kicks. Grizzly starting goalkeeper Lexi Winkle made two saves, while Ojeda made four – as both keepers played a half each.

Butler will try to stop a two-game losing streak Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. road conference game at Coffeyville (9-4, 5-3), who have won three straight games. The Grizzlies defeated Coffeyville 3-1 in El Dorado back on Sept. 14.

NOTES: Butler leads the all-time series 22-9-1 over Johnson County. The Cavaliers' win was just their third over Butler in El Dorado, as the Grizzlies are 10-3-0 all-time in contests played at home vs. Johnson.
