LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Butler women's indoor track and field team took home the hardware Friday night, as the squad won both the Region VI and Jayhawk West conference trophies for the 2013 indoor season. It marks the second time that the Butler women have won the indoor team title, joining the 2008 squad.
In addition to the team trophies, Grizzly sophomore Latesha Bigby was named the Region VI women's field athlete of the meet and head coach Jeff Becker was named the women's head coach of the meet.
The Butler women won the region title with 128 points, beating runner-up Cowley by 10.5 points. Bigby accounted for 46 of those points as she finished first in the pentathlon with 3,588 points, winning three of the five events. In addition to the pentathlon, Bigby took first in the 60m hurdles and the long jump. She also had runner-up finishes in the high jump and 800m run.
Sophomores Remona Burchell (200m dash) and Fiona Masai (3000m run) also had first-place finishes in their respective events. The 4x400m relay team of Carole Idolphine, Jonelle Reinert, Nhaieemah Horne and Burchell also took first.
Finishing second place were Burchell (60m dash), Horne (600m run) and Masai (1-mile run), as well as the 4x800m relay team of Abiane Collymore, Reinert, Horne and Masai. Other top-five finishes came from Idolphine (600m run, fourth) and Josie Wright (weight throw, third).
Next up for the Butler women will be the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held in Lubbock, Texas, on March 1.
