Alfred Larry wins outdoor national title in 400 meter dash

MESA, Ariz. - Alfred Larry put a cap on a stellar sophomore track season, easily winning the men's 400 meter dash at the NJCAA Track and Field Championships at John D. Riggs Stadium.

Larry, who had also won the indoor national championship earlier this year in New York City, ran 45.80 at the outdoor meet and was the only runner to break 46 seconds in the event.

He had won his heat of preliminaries the night before, holding off Fred Kerly of South Plains. His time, however, was only third fastest among the nine qualifiers for Saturday's finals. When it came to the final race, Larry broke away from the pack down the final straightaway and won the race by two strides.

Larry also was a key member of Butler's 4x400 meter relays, which placed fifth nationally. Shaquille AlleyneSteven Calloway and Leroy Moore joined Larry on the relay and ran a time of 3:10.27.

Those were the only two events in which Butler scored points at the national meet, but the 14 points were still enough to place the Butler men's team 16th in the nation.
