Grizzlies improve to 6-2 at Seminole Invitational

SEMINOLE, Okla. – Despite being shorthanded, the Butler volleyball team won three of four games this past weekend at the Seminole Invitational.

The Grizzlies (6-2 overall) had two players out with injury and another out with an illness, but managed to recover from a four-set loss to Trinity Valley, Texas, (17-25, 13-25, 25-23, 24-26) and win the final three matches of the invitational.

Butler defeated Clarendon, Texas (25-20-, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14), Pratt (27-25, 25-19, 25-23) and host Seminole State (22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 26-24).

"We are getting tested early as we have some injuries and the flu bug hit one, so for people to step in and continue the intense level of play is remarkable," said Butler head coach Rick Younger.

Against Trinity on Friday, Butler fell behind after two sets, but rallied to win the third set 25-23. The Grizzlies were edged 24-26 in the fourth set and suffered their second loss on the season. Sophomores McKenzie Johnson and Lexi Wartick had eight kills each, while sophomore Mackenzie Stuever added seven. Sophomore setter Mary Kangas had 22 assists and 19 digs as she once again has a double-double for the match. Sophomore libero Jessica Schwartz finished with 17 digs.

Butler rebounded with a four-set win over Clarendon, jumping out to a 2-0 set lead. After Clarendon won the third set, the Grizzlies cruised to a 25-14 win in the final fourth set. Johnson had 10 kills while hitting at a .381 clip, while Stuever had 9 kills, hit .529 and had three blocks. Kangas had 22 assists, two aces, and eight digs. Schwartz had 15 digs, with freshman Danae Bina adding 11 digs.

On Saturday against Pratt, the Grizzlies mauled the Beavers in a three-set sweep, winning two of the sets by two points. Wartick had 14 kills, hitting .462 with seven digs and one block. Freshman Rachel Buzanowski had 10 kills, hitting .333 and six solo Blocks. Freshman Baylie Harsh had 20 assists, while Kangas had another double-double (16 assists, 11 digs). Schwartz also had 14 digs.

In the final match of the invitational, Seminole State won the first set 25-22, but the Grizzlies rallied to win the final three sets of the match. Against Seminole, Wartick had nine kills, two aces and three blocks, while Johnson added eight kills, two aces and 13 digs. Kangas had 20 assists, three aces and 11 digs. Harsh finished with 17 assists and 11 digs.

On the weekend, Wartick had 36 kill and hit .234 with seven total blocks and 21 digs. Buzanowski had 34 kills, hitting .258 and 14.5 total blocks. Johnson finished with 29 kills, 33 digs and five aces, while Schwartz had 80 digs, and passed at a 2.46. Kangas had 6 aces, 80 assists and 49 digs. Bina passed at a 2.54, with five aces and 31 digs.

On Wednesday, Butler will host Pratt (6-3) in the first home match of the season at the Power Plant. The match will start at 6:30 p.m.
