Butler volleyball reaches regional semifinals

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Butler volleyball team earned its first postseason win under head coach Rick Younger before seeing the season come to an end with a loss to Colby in the semifinals of the Region VI tournament at the Sports Arena.

On Sunday night, the Grizzlies entered the tournament as the sixth seed and were the underdogs against third-seeded Seward County. The Grizzlies and Saints were tied 6-6 in the first set before Butler scored seven straight points to take control of the set. The Grizzlies led 20-10 and eventually won the first set 25-14.

The second set was tied at 12-12 and once again at 22-22 before Butler went on to win 26-24. The Grizzlies led big in the third set before Seward closed the gap late. The Grizzlies were able to hold off the Saints 25-23 to finish off the three-set sweep.

The win is the first postseason victory in 12 years for the Grizzlies, which coincides with their first year back in NJCAA Division I.

With the win, Butler advanced to the semifinal round against Colby, a team that had won six of seven sets against the Grizzlies during the regular season. Butler led just once in the match, that coming early in the second set, and never seriously threatened Colby, falling 25-21, 25-21, 25-16.

The Grizzlies end their season with a record of 14-20.
