Butler volleyball wins three-set sweep at Pratt

PRATT, Kan. - Butler volleyball picked up its second conference win of the season with a three-set sweep over Pratt on Wednesday at the Beaver Dome.

The Grizzlies had to rally to win two of the three sets, beating the host Beavers 29-27, 25-14, 27-25. Butler (12-7 overall, 2-6 conference) has now won eight of its last nine contests.

Butler led 5-1 early in the opening set and maintained the advantage until the Beavers took a 15-14 lead. Pratt held set point at 24-20, but the Grizzlies rallied with four straight points to tie. The set would tie again at 26 and 27-all before Butler closed out the set with a 29-27 win.

In the second set, the Grizzlies had little trouble as they built an early 10-point lead (17-7) and went on to take a 2-0 set lead. Pratt gained a 16-13 advantage before Butler made a 4-0 run after a timeout. The Beavers regained the lead at 23-21, but the Grizzlies answered back again with two points to tie before closing out the match.

Butler received solid play from middle hitters Cassidy Lutz (seven kills, five blocks) and Kelsey Hitch (nine kills, three blocks), as well as a team-high 11 kills from freshman Brooke Fender. Sophomore setter Halie Sigurdson led the Grizzlies in assists (19) and aces (2), while freshman setter Andie Nibarger added 11 assists.

Defensively, the Grizzlies had three players finish in double-digits in the dig category. Freshman libero Abby Goodrum had 20 digs, while Fender and Katie Dyer had 16 and 14, respectively.

Butler will host Cloud County this Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. conference match. The contest will be held at the Circle High School gymnasium in Towanda.
