Lechtenberg named to Butler volleyball coaching post

Former Kansas State standout Lisa Lechtenberg has been named the new head volleyball coach at Butler Community College.

Lechtenberg will take over following the retirement of long-time head coach Rick Younger.

"We are very excited to have Lisa join our volleyball program," said Butler athletic director Todd Carter. "Lisa has a unique combination of high-level experience both as a player and a coach at the NCAA Division I level, as well as an energy and enthusiasm for the game. We believe she is someone who will be a great role model for the young women in our program and a person who the local community will be excited about as well."

Lechtenberg will officially begin her duties at Butler in January.

"First of all, I would like to thank Todd Carter, Matt Jacobs and the search committee for the opportunity to join Butler," Lechtenberg said. "I am looking forward to hitting the ground running and getting on campus to start working with the team."

As a four-year starter and team captain at Kansas State, Lechtenberg was named first-team All-Big 12 in 2001. She was also a three-time All-Big 12 first-team academic selection. As a junior, she had one of the best performances of her career against No. 1 Nebraska with a season-high 21 kills and 29 digs to lead KSU past the Cornhuskers.

After her playing career was over, Lechtenberg spent one season as a student assistant coach at Kansas State. The Wildcats finished the year with a 20-11 record and a second-place finish in the Big 12.

Lechtenberg then spent one season as the top assistant at Southwest Minnesota State. She helped guide the Mustangs to a 20-11 overall mark and a third-place finish in the Northern Sun Conference.

She then moved on to Montana State, a Division I program in the Big Sky Conference. She was an assistant for three seasons, with two seasons as the top assistant. She coached seven all-conference players.

Lechtenberg then left college coaching and moved to El Dorado, where she has lived since. She spent one season as the head coach at El Dorado High School and three seasons as the head volleyball coach at El Dorado Middle School. Most recently, she has served as an elementary school teacher while coaching the EHS freshman team.

Lechtenberg is originally from Spencer, Neb., where she attended Spencer-Naper High in Nebraska where she was an all-state and all-conference performer in volleyball, basketball and track. Her dad has been a high school coach in Nebraska for more than 40 years, while her sister is also a high school coach in her home state, who led her team to finish fourth in the state this fall.
