Butler volleyball sweeps Dodge City for first conference win

DODGE CITY, Kan. — Butler volleyball picked up its first Jayhawk Conference win of the season with a three-set sweep over Dodge City on Saturday at the Conquistadors' Student Activities Center.

The Grizzlies (6-5 overall, 1-3 conference) rolled to a 25-10, 25-15, 25-19 win over Dodge City to win their fifth consecutive game, marking the longest win streak under Butler head coach Lisa Lechtenberg. In Lechtenberg's first season with the Grizzlies last year, Butler won four straight before losing its final five games of the season.

Butler scored the first five points of the opening set, then added a 7-1 run to build a 16-6 advantage. The Grizzlies hit well in the first set, finishing with nine kills on just two errors in 23 attempts for a .304 percentage. 

In the second set, the Grizzlies jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led by as many as 11 late en route to a 2-0 set lead in the match.

Butler held a 5-2 lead to open the final third set, but never pulled away for the set win until late. Dodge City scored the set's first point, marking the only time Butler trailed in the match.

Middle blocker Milayana Hollinger had a team-high nine blocks and seven kills while hitting at a .389 clip, Jaryn Benning added seven kills, four blocks and four digs on the front line.

Defensively, Amalie Rupertova led Butler with 19 digs, while Montana Soderberg finished with 10. Sydney Scanlon was the top Grizzly in assists (23) and aces (3) while adding three kills.

Butler will continue conference play with a 6:30 p.m. home contest on Wednesday against Independence at the Power Plant.
