The Butler cross country team opened up the 2013 season with a home triangular at Wartick Ranch on Saturday morning.
Grizzly sophomore transfer Edwin Serem won the men's 4K race with a time of 13:11.22. Serem finished seven seconds ahead of Wichita State's Chris Burnett.
In the women's 3K, the top Butler performer was sophomore Abiane Collymore, who finished 13th individually with a time of 11:59.56. Wichita State's Ebeissa Nyandwi placed first, finishing the course in 11:11.04.
Wichita State won both the men's and women's races. The Butler women finished second, while the men was unable to field a complete team.
Next Saturday, Butler will compete in the J.K. Gold Classic, which is hosted by Wichita State and held at the RAFT Ranch in Augusta.
