Butler women place 12th at OSU Cowboy Jamboree

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Butler cross country women finished 12th in the college women's 5K race at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday morning.

In just their second race of the season, the Grizzly women finished fifth among junior college teams and scored 315 points. El Paso (Texas) CC finished first overall with 57 points, followed by Oklahoma Baptist with 85.

"I felt that our women ran really well," said Butler head coach Ryan Turner. "Our 12th place finish is not very indicative of how well we ran. We ran into some bad luck with Jade Searles being unable to finish and that was a big hit to our team score."

Sophomore Janie Salinas was the top Butler female, placing 44th individually with a time of 20:53.3. The Grizzlies had two freshman runners - Roshae Burrell (49th, 21:04.8) and Irine Jepkemboi (50th, 21:06.0) - finish in the top 50.

Other point scorers for the Grizzlies were freshman Jeanna Baker (85th, 22:10.4) and sophomore Alex Fulton (87th, 22:12.1), while freshman Jessica Finney (88th, 22:14.0) and sophomore Ariente' Sims (98th, 22:41.5) just missed out on contributing to the team point total.

Butler had a total of 12 runners on the 5K course. Other runners were Conangela Senior (22:44.8), Tesla Madsen (23:02.5), Darian Trost (23:07.9), Kimberly Travis (24:08.0) and Madison Bissell (24:25.3).

"Several of the ladies surprised me today," said Turner. "Not that I didn't think that they were capable of running well, but they really stayed engaged and kept racing. Sometimes we have a tendency to fall asleep in a race and just go through the motions."

The Grizzlies will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational in Shawnee, Okla.
