Women finish Runner-Up at Terry Masterson Twilight, Men finish 4th

Hutchinson, KS- The Butler Cross Country team started their seasons Friday night under the stars as they competed in the Terry Masterson Twilight hosted by Hutchinson Community College.

The Women had a strong showing in the 3-mile (4.83K) race finishing runner-up in the meet behind conference opponent Cowley. Five Grizzlies finished in the top 20 in the meet helping the team to the second-place finish.

Michelle Sanchez led the charge for Butler finishing 4th with a time of 19:42.2. She was followed closely by teammate Zadie St. Louis who came across the line at 200:16.3. Stephany Lechuga finished 14th with a time of 20:51.9 while Shanique Masters and Hilda Kipruto finished back to back at 18 and 19th places with times of 21:10.1 and 21:19.2 respectively.

"Our Women went out and competed, they had grit when other girls folded. We're only going to get stronger on the women's side. Zadie St. Louis and Stephany Lechuga both surprised me with their performances. They ran great and they are going to keep improving as we move throughout the season," commented Head coach Dustin Mettler.

Coach Mettler on the overall performance from the teams, "We did what I expected them to do in the first race of the year. Our spread on both sides was good. However, it's August and we've got a lot of room for improvement until November. We need to work on our consistency. We need to tighten the gap on both sides and make sure we improve every day."

Both the men and women will begin preparation for their next meet happening on Saturday, September 7 as they compete in the JK Gold Classic in August, KS. Women start at 8:00am followed by the men at 8:30am.
