Butler Athletes of the Week - Jan. 27, 2014

Butler’s Shomari Triggs and Alfred Larry have been named SpringHill Suites Athletes of the Week for Jan. 27, 2014.

Shomari Triggs was clutch for Butler in two nailbiters last week, scoring the game-winning points in both games while averaging 19 points and 6.5 steals per game. He had 14 points and six steals in a 67-65 win over Allen County on Wednesday, including the game-winning shot on a floater in the lane with 25 seconds to play. Then on Saturday, he was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line on his way to scoring a game-high 24 points with seven assists. It was his pair of made free throws with .7 seconds left that forced the game into overtime, then he made two more free throws with 34 seconds remaining to give Butler the win in the extra period.

Triggs, a 5-9 sophomore guard from Milwaukee, Wisc., leads the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game while averaging five assists per game.

Butler will next play in Independence on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Butler's Alfred Larry won the men's 600 meter run at the Jayhawk Classic on Friday in Lawrence with a time of 1:15.24. The time not only was good enough to win the meet against several four-year universities, but also qualified him for the NJCAA national indoor meet in that event.

Larry, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., has now qualified for nationals in two events (400 and 600) and has won at least one event in each of Butler’s first three meets

The Butler track teams will compete this Friday at the Varsity Apartments Invitational at Wichita State.
