CF Tops Butler 7-3 in Opening Game of National Tournament

The College of Central Florida Patriots were able to overcome an early deficit to win game one of the tournament over the 6th seeded Butler. Butler got off to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a lead off single by Madi Young and a two-run home run by their two-hole hitter Ari Cordova. The Patriots answered right back in the top of the second with a two-out, two RBI single to center field by Gabbie Haas scoring both Katie Hogue and Madisyn Riggins. The Grizzlies responded by taking the lead back in the bottom of the second when Paape, who led off the inning with a hit by pitch, scored on a hard hit ground ball to short by Cordova that Brooke Roberts couldn't handle.

In the top of the fifth the Patriots got their big inning and took the lead 5-3 scoring three runs in the inning. Kamaya Cohen and Brooke Roberts both singled before Katie Hogue singled to score Cohen from second and tie the game. Both Roberts and Hogue would later score on a wild pitch that got away from the Grizzlies catcher Brianna Acosta. The Patriots added on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a double by Gianna Guerriero that scored Jade Fayad and Gabby Haas.

CF pitcher Savannah Barnett settled in after the early scoring from Butler and shut down their powerful offense the rest of the way for the victory. She threw a complete game seven innings allowing only three runs on seven hits and striking out five batters.

The Patriots advance to the next round in the winner's bracket and will play Paris Junior College (38-16) on Wednesday at 4 PM MST/6 PM EST.
