Jordan Abbott begins his 11th season with Butler football, where he oversees the defensive safety position and special teams.

Abbott brings out the best in his players, at Butler has had 27 All-Conference defensive back selections in ten seasons – an average of just under three per season. In the spring of 2021, Butler had two All-Conference honorable-mention selections in cornerback Nickendre Stiger (Wichita, KS) and safety Ian McSwain (Goddard, KS). In 2019, Butler had two All-Conference honorable-mention selections in cornerbacks Kway'Chon Chisom and Alfahiym Walcott.

Butler was 2-4 during the Spring 2021 COVID-19 season with two games canceled due to the pandemic. 

In 2019, the Butler defense allowed just 17.2ppg while holding opposing offenses to 251.8ypg. They compiled 14 interceptions during the season and totaled 45 sacks. Abbott's stars in the secondary were a integral parth of the Butler defense. Defensive back Alfahiym Walcott was second ont the team in total tackles at 70 with an average of 5.4 per game and other defensive back Kway'Chon Chisom was clsoe behind with 67 total tackles. Walcott had three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and 14 pass breakups. Chisom had 3.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries three interceptions and a blocked kick.

Cornerback Octavious Morgan was an All-KJCCC first-team selection in 2016, giving Abbott five first-team conference players since joining the Butler staff.

In 2015, Abbott won his fourth Jayhawk Conference title in five seasons with the Grizzlies, who finished 9-2 overall and No. 5 in the final NJCAA rankings. Abbott had four All-Conference defensive back selections, with cornerback Octavious Morgan named to the first team. Safeties Adonis Saunders, Aaron Peak and cornerback DeSean Washington received honorable mention honors. Butler led the conference with 16 interceptions, with the defensive back unit recording 10 of those picks.

Abbott’s first three seasons were successful by any standard, as the Grizzlies led the conference in total defense while winning both conference and Region VI titles all three years.

In his first two seasons, Abbott coached an All-American defensive back as Tate Omli earned second-team honors in 2012, while Zach Miller was first-team in 2011. Both seasons, all four Butler starting defensive backs earned All-Jayhawk Conference honors. Omli and cornerback Marcus Dillard were first-team selections while Torrell Safford and Max Martinez were honorable mention picks.

Abbott came to Butler after three successful seasons at Valdosta State University in Georgia, where he worked on the defensive side of the ball at VSU, most recently working with the defensive backfield. He helped lead the Blazers to the 2010 Gulf South Conference championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs (2008 and 2010).

Abbott has a strong history of success at both of his previous coaching positions, both at Valdosta State and at Florida State, where he served as a student assistant coach for two seasons. At FSU, Abbott worked with the defensive ends and special teams units, participating in the 2006 Emerald Bowl and the 2007 Music City Bowl. Abbott also gained invaluable experience working the Bobby Bowden football camp, where he served as a defensive ends coach in 2006 and 2007.

Abbott has considerable success working with very talented players, as he has coached 48 All-Conference and five All-Americans during his career as well as Division II National Defensive Player of the Year Larry Dean. He has also coached two NFL players: Everett Brown of the Carolina Panthers and Alex Boston of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Other NFL players that Abbott has worked with include Geno Hayes (Buccaneers), Dakota Watson (Buccaneers), Lawrence Timmons (Steelers), Patrick Robinson (Saints), Graham Gano (Redskins) and Myron Rolle (Titans).

Prior to moving to Florida State, Abbott spent two seasons playing at NAIA Webber International, where he saw time as a fullback, linebacker and strong safety while playing in the infancy of the program, which began play in 2002. Abbott played his prep career at Belleview High School in Belleview, Fla.

Abbott and his wife Monica have a son Eli.
