Butler holds high-powered Neosho in check to win at home

The Neosho Panthers came in as one of the nation's leading scoring teams, but it was the Butler Grizzlies who put on the show Saturday night at the Power Plant, racing out to a 33-point halftime lead on their way to a 76-59 win.

Butler scored the first seven points of the game, then after Neosho got back within five points, the Grizzlies went on a 24-2 run to put away the Panthers. Bakari Triggs was the catalyst offensively, as he had 17 points in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Butler would eventually lead by as many as 33 points in the first half, that being the halftime margin at 51-18. Neosho, which is fifth nationally averaging103 points per game, had less than a point per minute in the first half.

In the second half, Butler expanded the lead once more to 35 points and still led by as many as 30 with 11:24 to go after a 3-pointer by Ernest Burton. Neosho would finish the game on a 22-9 run to cut the final margin to just 17 points. Still, Neosho's 59 points were by far the lowest output of the season for the Panthers. The previous low had been in an 83-78 loss to Northwest Kansas on Jan. 10.

Bakari Triggs led Butler in scoring with 19 points, while Dominique O'Connor had 13. Lamar Wofford-Humphrey and Trent Richardson had nine points apiece for the Grizzlies.

Butler improves to 18-6 on the season with the win and is 4-2 in Jayhawk East Conference play after the first half of the conference season. Butler will be at home for its next game, which is a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Coffeyville.
