The Butler men's basketball team is moving on to Wichita after a thrilling 63-59 home win over Barton on Saturday in the first round of the Region VI playoffs at the Power Plant.
The win puts Butler (22-9) into the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, where the Grizzlies will face arch-rival Hutchinson at 3 p.m. Thursday at Wichita State's Koch Arena. The Blue Dragons (24-7) defeated Allen County on Saturday. Barton sees its season end at 20-11.
Barton took control of the game early, leading 7-3. Butler answered with a 9-0 run to go up 12-7. The Grizzlies would go up by as many as 10 points after a basket and free throw by Shomari Triggs made it 26-16 with 5:16 to play in the half.
Barton then responded with an 8-0 run to get within two points, but a late surge kept Grizzlies in the lead, capped by a 3-pointer by Shomari Triggs just before the end of the half that put the Grizzlies up 33-26.
In the second half, Barton would tie the game with 10:32 to play and later took a 48-46 lead on a pair of free throws with eight minutes to go. When Bakari Triggs hit a 3-pointer to make it a 51-50 game with 7:30 to go, the Grizzlies would not trail again.
Butler led by as many as five points with four minutes to go and was able to hold on down the stretch, aided by a technical foul call on the Barton bench after a charge foul on the Cougars with 6.8 seconds to play.
Shomari Triggs led Butler with 25 points, while Dominique O'Connor scored 11 points and Larry Fitzgerald scored 10.
