Late comeback falls just short for Butler men against Pratt

The Butler men whittled a 10-point deficit down to just one in the closing moments on Saturday against Pratt, but couldn't finish off the comback in a 73-69 loss to the Beavers at the Power Plant.

Butler, which led the majority of the first half and had a 37-32 lead at the break, still was up by as many as five points with 14 minutes to go.

Pratt then surged into the lead and eventually went ahead 57-47 with 10 minutes to go. Butler would get back-to-back 3-pointers from Derrick Byrd to crawl back into the game and then got a 3-pointer from Damien Akao that made it a 70-69 game with 1:16 to play.

Pratt was called for a shot clock violation with 44 seconds remaining, but on the other end, Butler was called for an offensive foul. Pratt made three of four free throws in the final minute, while Butler couldn't get a shot to fall.

Butler was led by a career night from freshman Semaj Hervey. He made all four 3-pointers he attempted in the first half and had 15 points at the break. He would hit a fifth 3-pointer in the second half and finished with 18 points.

Derrick Byrd had 15 points and Damien Akao added 12 for the Grizzlies in the loss.

Butler is now 12-11 on the season and 4-8 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Grizzlies will be on the road on Monday to take on Cowley at 7:30 p.m.
