WICHITA, Kan. — Butler sophomore Tavarius Wright was honored by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, as he was named the Junior College Male Athlete of the Year during Thursday's annual banquet at the Hyatt Regency Wichita.

Wright won two individual NJCAA track titles this season, winning the indoor 60-meter dash (6.11 seconds) and taking top honors in the outdoor 100-meter dash (10.12 seconds). The Olive Branch, Miss., native was also the anchor leg of the outdoor 4x100-meter relay team (39.20 seconds; Mark Doyley, Javaghn Spicer, Cardet Bienvenue) which took first.

This season, Wright was undefeated in all final races when he competed in either the 60-meter or 100-meter events, but ran his personal-best times of the year at both national meets. In March, Wright set the Grizzly school record in the 60-meter dash at the national meet in Pittsburg. He then followed the indoor title by winning the national outdor 100-meter dash in May, as Wright edged out Terrance Laird of Hinds (Miss.) by just two-hundredths of a second in a photo finish in Hobbs, N.M.

Wright has signed to run next year at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.
