Grizzlies power past Cougars in Wednesday road doubleheader

The Butler Grizzlies won their eighth and ninth games in a row on Wednesday, as they improved to 17-1 away from home with a doubleheader sweep of the Barton Cougars in Great Bend on Wednesday. The Grizzlies won game one 6-2 before overpowering the Cougars with a 9-0 shutout in game two, as the Grizzlies finished the day with five home runs in two games.

Game 1

The Grizzlies used a three run fourth inning to secure the victory in the first game of the day, led by Madi Young's two run home run, her twelfth of the year. Young finished with three hits, just a double short of the cycle as she batted in two runs. Alex Olson also finished with two runs batted in as Butler finished with six runs in eight hits.

Emma Koeneke secured her eighteenth victory of the season, pitching five innings and allowing just one run on one hit, striking out four batters to improve her record on the year to 18-1.

Game 2

Butler hit four homers in the second game of the day to finish the sweep. A five run third inning powered by a three run home run by Alex Olson was the key inning in the victory. Emily Adler, Mariah Wheeler, and Reese Briggs also hit home runs as the Grizzlies were able to run rule the Cougars in five.

It was the usual domination on the mound for Butler's game two starter as Allyson Montgomery shut out the Cougars in four innings, giving up just one hit and striking out seven batters. Jayhawk Conference Pitcher of the Week award winner Kendal LeGrand secured the shutout in the fifth inning with a quick three outs, allowing just one hit.

Butler has won nine straight games, extending their record to 34-2 and 22-2 in conference play. Butler's series this weekend at East Park with the Dodge City Conquistadors was postponed with rain in the forecast, which means Butler will get back to action as they head back on the road on Tuesday, playing a doubleheader against the Seward Saints in Liberal.
