Grizzlies crowned Region VI Champions for sixth consecutive year

The Butler Grizzlies moved one step closer to their goal of winning a national championship, repeating as Region VI champions for the sixth consecutive year, finishing the job with a 7-2 victory in the championship game of the Region VI tournament at Legends Park in Dodge City, defeating the sixth seeded Seward County Saints for the second day in a row to cement themselves as Region VI Champions.

The Grizzlies will move onto the Plains District championship on Thursday, traveling to McCook, Nebraska for a best of three series against McCook College, starting with a double header on Friday, and if necessary, a third and final game on Friday, with a trip to the NJCAA World Series on the line. The Grizzlies will be looking to advance to the NJCAA Nationla Tournament for the sixth consecutive time.

Butler surged past the Saints with four runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth. Butler's seven runs on nine hits was enough to get the job done, led by Ari Cordova who was the hero for the Grizzlies again. Her home run in the third inning opened the scoring as she blasted her 11th home run of the season.  Reese Briggs starred with three RBIs, and Mariah Wheeler batted in two.

Emma Koeneke improved to a spectacular 21-1 on the year with the victory, pitching four innings and allowing only one run on three hits, striking out six batters on the way to the victory. Allyson Montgomery also came in for an inning, striking out a batter and giving up two hits, before Kendal LeGrand came in and shut the door with an inning and two thirds, stranding Seward with the bases loaded in the sixth before retiring the Saints in order in the seventh inning for the victory.

The win improves Butler's record on the season to 46-2, their winning streak to 21 games in a row, and their record on neutral fields to 6-0. Butler cemented a series sweep against the Saints, winning all six games and scoring 71 runs in the process.
