Morgan Bohanan promoted to lead Butler Softball

Butler assistant coach Morgan Bohanan has been promoted and named the next head coach of the Butler Grizzlies Softball program announced Butler Athletic Director Todd Carter.

"We couldn't be happier than to have Morgan take over the head coaching role," said Carter. "She has been here both as a player and a coach and knows how to win at the highest level and I look forward to what she will do in the years to come."

Bohanan, a former player and assistant coach under legendary coach Doug Chance, takes over her role as the head coach immediately.

"Getting that call was a big moment for me," commented Bohanan. "I have been around Butler Softball since I was eight years old and being able to watch this program evolve over the years and see it become what it has under Doug Chance, and now being able to lead that same program is an honor. Butler is very special to me, and I'm excited that I can start my head coaching career here."

After starting her coaching career at Otero Junior College (CO) in 2019, Bohanan has been an assistant coach the last two seasons for the Grizzlies. She worked primarily with the hitters and the infielders along with the day-to-day operations while being heavily involved in recruiting. During her two years with the program as an assistant, the Grizzlies won two conference titles, two Region VI titles, two Plains District titles and made the NJCAA National tournament both seasons while accumulating an overall record of 99-8.

"The people are why I returned and why I am here today," said Bohanan. "Butler has some pretty amazing people on and off campus that make being a part of the college and athletic department unlike anywhere else."

Prior to starting her coaching career, the Goddard, KS native, began at the University of Kansas before transferring to Butler in 2016 where she helped the Grizzlies to the programs first ever NJCAA National Championship and a 53-4 record. She led the team in a number of offensive categories during the season and was voted both an NJCAA and NFCA First Team All-American along with being voted as a First Team All-KJCCC selection. After Butler, Bohanan attended Creighton University where she finished out her playing career and earned her bachelor's degree.

"One of the most important things that I have learned from Doug that I will carry with me now is to be where your feet are," mentioned Bohanan. "As a player that was, in my opinion, one of the reasons why we were so good under pressure and what contributed to us winning a national championship. The same goes for the coaching side of it as well. Now that I am a head coach, 'remembering to be where my feet are' will be huge for me, especially taking over a program that has been so successful for so many years."

"I am confident that the program is in good hands with Morgan taking over", commented former head coach and Bohanan's mentor Doug Chance. "She is smart, motivated and a great communicator. I believe she is the right person to maintain the culture of the program and keep the tradition alive."

Bohanan takes over a program that is coming off their 11th-straight KJCCC title, sixth straight Region VI and District titles and has accumulated a 772-177 record over the last 18-seasons.

"People can expect a team that is going to have high expectations, and we will be a program that always represents Butler Athletics and Butler Community College the right way on and off the field. I can't wait to start this new journey."
