Butler earns No. 6 seed in upcoming national tournament

The Butler women will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming national tournament.

The Butler women are headed to the national tournament as the No. 6 seed in the bracket, as was announced by the NJCAA during a selection show on Monday morning.

That means the Grizzlies will have a first-round bye in Lubbock, with their first game coming on Wednesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. The Grizzlies (28-4) will face the winner of Tuesday's game between No. 11 Northwest Florida (24-5) and No. 22 Northern Oklahoma-Enid (28-3).

The team watched the selection show Monday from their locker room. The Grizzlies were the final team announced during the show.

While Butler waited to see its seed on Monday, the Grizzlies knew they were in the tournament as an automatic pick by virtue of winning the Region VI Tournament on Wednesday.

The Jayhawk Conference will be well represented in Texas as both Seward County and Hutchinson will be in the field as at-large representatives. Seward is the No. 7 seed at 30-3, and Hutchinson is the No. 11 seed, also with a 30-3 record. Butler beat both teams on its way to winning the Region VI championship.

Butler has just one previous appearance at the NJCAA national tournament. The Grizzlies were a No. 10 seed in 2014. That year, Butler beat No. 23 Southwest Mississippi and No. 7 Shelton State (Ala.) on their way to the Elite Eight before falling to Chipola (Fla.).

The national tournament will be played March 18-23 at the Rip Griffin Center. The 1,950-seat arena is on the campus of Lubbock Christian University.
