Godwin's hat trick not enough as Butler falls to Tribunes in final game of National Tournament

The Butler Grizzlies bowed out of the 2022 NJCAA tournament in their final game of the season, as they could not weather the storm, giving up three consecutive goals to fall to Monroe Community College (NY) in Evans, Georgia on Tuesday.

It was not for lack of effort. Kenzee Godwin was heroic, scoring a hat trick in the first 20 minutes of play. She scored three of the first four goals and Butler took a commanding 3-1 lead into the halftime interval. Godwin earned her second career hat trick in her final game with the Grizzlies, the other coming in a four goal effort last season against Barton in the Region VI final. She finished the season with 19 goals to lead the Grizzlies.

After giving up a goal to start the second half. The Grizzlies would double their lead again through a Brooke Sullivan break away goal as she was able to slide past the defense. It was Sullivan's second goal of the tournament, and it capped off a freshman campaign that saw her find the back of the net 16 times.

Coach Adam Hunter was playing all freshman in the second half to get them National Tournament experience. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies couldn't make the lead last. The Tribunes scored in the 55th, 62nd and 64th minutes to take the lead and Butler would never recover as the final whistle ended the season.

The Grizzlies end the season at 18-4-2, as they earned their 13th Jayhawk East title and their 10th trip to the national tournament.
