Butler volleyball extends their winning streak to five consecutive games after cruising to a 3-0 victory over Independence Wednesday night from the Power Plant.

"We finally played Butler volleyball," said head coach Lisa Lechtenberg after tonight's sweep of the Pirates.

The Grizzlies jumped all over Independence in set one taking a quick 4-0 lead before Pirates head coach Chris Taylor had to call his first timeout. The timeout was not as effective as he would have liked as Butler continued to roll scoring five of the next six points taking a 9-1 lead and forcing another Chris Taylor timeout.

Controlling the set the entire way through, Butler kept the Pirates at bay with great defense and an aggressive offense. Amalie Rupertova spiked a ball on the Pirate side that ended up four rows up in the bleachers as Butler took a 20-5 lead. Independence would score some points late but it was already over as the Grizzlies took set one 25-11.

Sydney Scanlon started set two with a serving ace and the Grizzlies continued to roll jumping out to another quick lead in the set. After falling down 7-2 to start the set, Independence called a quick timeout.  A serving error by the Grizzlies would end an 8-point run that gave Butler a 12-3 lead. Butler extended their lead 17-4 after big plays from Jaryn Benning and Sydney Scanlon.

Back to back serving aces by Scanlon gave Butler the 16-point advantage late in the set and that momentum would carry the Grizzlies to a set two win 25-17.

A deja vu moment in set three happened after Butler again took a 7-2 lead followed by an Independence timeout. Independence would get within two at 14-12 but the Butler attack was too strong and the Grizzlies would score 11 of the next 17 points to take the third and final set 25-18 and win the match.

Sydney Scanlon had another huge game for the Grizzlies as she finished the match with 25 set assists, eight digs, two blocks, two serving aces and two kills. Jaryn Benning led in kills with nine while Milayna Hollinger and Amalie Rupertova finished with six and five respectfully.  Morgan Bryand served up three aces while Keera Parks served two along with her seven blocks.

"The girls implemented our game plan really well tonight. Probably the best we have done all year," said coach Lechtenberg.

"We passed really well tonight which allowed us to run whatever play we were running and our hitters did a really good job of putting the ball away," said sophomore setter Sydney Scanlon. "I can set anyone and know they are going to put the ball away, it is great."

The Grizzlies are now 7-5 overall and 2-3 in in KJCCC play and will travel to Pratt (5-11, 2-3) on Saturday for a 6:30pm matchup.
