Butler opens up KJCCC play with a straight-set victory over Colby

The Butler volleyball team got off to a hot start in conference action defeating the Colby Trojans in straight sets – 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 – to improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in KJCCC play.

After a back and forth set one, then Grizzlies went on a 13-3 run closing out the set winning 25-13. A big kill mid set from Carly Clennan sparked the Butler team who closed it out strong. The second and third set were back and forth much like the first, but the Grizzlies, in all three sets put together a string of points late in the set to close out the Trojans.

"We weren't as strong as we can be offensively in this match," said head coach Lisa Lechtenberg. "We only hit .185 as a team, we know we can do better than that, but it was a great win for us to start conference play."

Kayli Duncan and Ivy Fink led the charge on offense both finishing with nine kills in the match. Duncan hit .571 and had two blocks while Fink added in 15 digs.

Defending KJCCC Defensive Player of the Week continued her hot streak digging up 30 balls in the match with three assists and two service aces. Carly Clennan finished with eight kills and three blocks.

This is just the fourth time the Grizzlies have defeated the Trojans since 2014.

NEXT UP: Butler (7-2, 1-0) will take on non-conference opponent Hesston College on the road on Friday, September 3rd at 6:30pm in Hesston, KS. They return home on Monday, September 6th in a matchup with the Blue Dragons from Hutchinson. That match is slated for a 6:00pm start.
