Making history; volleyball wins first ever Jayhawk conference championship

The Butler volleyball team etched their names in the history of Butler volleyball forever as they won the outright KJCCC regular season championship Saturday afternoon in front of a packed Power Plant.

"I am really proud of these girls," said head coach Lisa Lechtenberg after Saturday's win and conference clinching win. "They have worked so hard for this and I am so happy they got to do it at home, on sophomore night, in front of so many family, friends and fans."

With two regular season games to play, Butler is a perfect 14-0 in conference action. They are riding a 26-game winning streak and have not lost since August 27 in a 3-1 match against No. 2 Blinn (TX) reaching a 30-2 record thus far in the season.

The Grizzlies, who haven't finished inside the top-3 in the KJCCC since taking third in 2017, are two games away from an undefeated conference season. Since switching to Division I volleyball at the start of the 2014 season, the Grizzlies best record in conference play was a 10-6 finish in 2017. Under head coach Lisa Lechtenberg, the Grizzlies most wins in conference play came last season, Spring 2021, when they finished 9-7 on the season with a 5th place KJCCC finish.

Not only is this team undefeated in conference play but they have lost just two total sets to conference opponents and are 42-3 in total sets against KJCCC opponents. Seward took two from Butler while Colby stole a set last week from the Grizzlies.

"We have such a balanced team," commented Lechtenberg, "that if we handle the ball on our end, it is really hard to defend. This team is focused, disciplined and they have trusted us and each other all year long and we still have some things to accomplish."

Butler has locked up home court advantage for the Region VI tournament but will look to put an exclamation on the regular season this week with two more wins. They won't be easy as the Grizzlies will travel into Saints territory on Thursday, October 28 to face No. 11-ranked Seward. Seward is the only conference team to take the Grizzlies to five sets this year back on September 25 in El Dorado.
