Butler women’s track and field sprinter Star Mpama and softball infielder Claire Lopez have been selected as the White Eagle Credit Union Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 29 through Feb. 4th.

Star Mpama (Women’s Track and Field)

Mpama, a sophomore sprinter from Nigeria, had an impressive meet at the Washburn Open on Friday and Saturday. She placed 11th in the 800m, running it in 2:19.93 which is good for the 19th best time in the NJCAA this season. Mpama was also part of the women’s 4x400m relay squad that placed second at the meet, running 3:52.91. That squad’s time is fifth best in the NJCAA this season and qualifies them for the indoor national meet.

Claire Lopez (Softball)

Lopez, a freshman from Olathe, had an extremely impressive start to her collegiate career, starting all four games at second base for Butler as they began the season 4-0 in Colorado with wins over NJC and Otero. Lopez tallied a .625 average with five hits including a triple and an RBI. She walked six times and holds an on-base percentage of .786, leading the Grizzlies. Once Lopez was on base, she was lethal, stealing five bases and coming home to score seven runs.
