Wilkey named KJCCC Special Teams Player of the Week

COLBY, Kan. – Butler football wide receiver Russell Wilkey was named the KJCCC special teams player of the week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Wilkey, a sophomore from Junction City, Kansas, earns the first weekly award of the season for Butler football.

Wilkey had a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown where he tracked a shanked punt up in front of everyone, caught it and took off for the score. He averaged 26.5 yards per punt return with the other being a solid 13-yard return that set the Grizzlies up with nice field position as Butler defeated Highland 38-19. Wilkey also made a reception on offense for four yards.

The 5'9 wide receiver/punt returner had a solid showing offensively in week one at Garden City as he finished with three receptions for 53 yards, with a 33-yard reception being the long.

Wilkey was part of Butler's highly successful night on special teams vs. Highland on Saturday.  Defensive lineman Jaden Roper blocked a Scottie extra point and defensive back Timothy Croskey returned it 97 yards for the two-point conversion. Punter Chevy Edwards had five punts on the night, with four being inside the 20-yard line. He had a long punt of 49 yards.

Butler football is off this week but returns to action for a home contest vs. Independence on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.

Butler Grizzlies are supported by LASIK Omaha eye doctors and eye surgeons.
