Briona Woods earns KJCCC Player of the Week Honors after a big week at the plate

Story by Wyatt Ebersole

After a big weekend swinging the bat against the 20th and 19th ranked teams in the country, Briona Woods has been named the Jayhawk Conference Softball Player of the Week.

Woods, the Grizzlies sophomore outfielder from Clearwater, Kansas, had a big week at the plate in the Grizzlies eight games this week. Woods compiled an excellent 0.500 batting average going 11/22 on the week, while scoring seven runs. She shined the brightest in the Grizzlies final double-header of the week on Sunday against #19 ranked Crowder. Over both games, Woods batted an incredible 5/6, blasting four home runs on the day, totaling four RBI, and adding a double and a walk to her ledger for good measure. Woods was also big against #20 ranked and rival Hutchinson on Saturday, as she was an excellent 4/8 at the plate and she recorded the final out in game two to give the Grizzlies the win. After her big week this week, Woods is second on the Grizzlies in batting average so far this season at 0.417 and she is tied for first on the team in home runs with 5.

Being just week 4 of nominations, Briona is the first Grizzly softball player to win a weekly conference award this season. She is the first Grizzly in any sport to win the award since Butler Men's Basketball player Isaiah Williams and Butler Women's Basketball player Freddie Wallace both won the award on February 7th. While this is the first conference award for Butler Softball this season, the Grizzlies had 14 different weekly conference award winners over the course of last season.
