Butler earns second shutout win over top-10 opponent

The Butler women's soccer team closed out a successful weekend with a second straight win over a nationally-ranked opponent.

After beating No. 2 Iowa Western on Friday, Butler handled No. 8 Laramie County (WY) by an identical 2-0 score on Sunday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The win marks the second time in program history that Butler has opened the season with two shutouts over ranked opponents. The Grizzlies opened the 2011 season with a pair of 1-0 wins over Iowa Western and Laramie County.

The Grizzlies got goals from freshman Jessica Quezada and Paige Achey in the first half, but did not score in the second half.

Quezada's goal was fired from distance, as it came from 40 yards out on the right side of the goal and found the back of the net in the upper right corner of the goal in the 38th minute.

Just three minutes later, Achey was alone with space on the left side of the box and slid a ball on the ground just inside the left post to make it a 2-0 game.

Butler had additional chances to score in the second half, but Laramie played a much more composed side of soccer to keep the Grizzlies from adding to the lead.

Defensively, Butler allowed just one shot on goal, which was saved by freshman keeper Jami Reichenberger. She backed up a Butler defensive unit that has now posted two shutouts with 180 minutes of scoreless soccer to start the year.

The Grizzlies, now 2-0 on the year, will play two home games in the coming week against Oklahoma teams, facing Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Thursday and then facing Rose State College on Sunday.

Butler is now 4-6-1 against Laramie County in program history, snapping a two-game losing streak to the Eagles dating back to 2013.
