Volleyball goes 3-1 including Top 15 win in the McCook Tournament

After a loss Thursday night in Colby, the Butler Volleyball team (7-2, 2-1) pieced together a successful weekend slate of games finishing 3-1 with a win over a Top 12 NJCAA team. 

The Grizzlies started off the McCook (NE) Tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Trinidad State Junior College (CO) (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) but would drop the second match of the day to Northeastern Junior College (CO) 3-0 losing (25-14, 25-14, 25-17).

Saturday Butler got things rolling at 8:00am with a matchup with Central Nebraska. Sydney Morrow's double-double would help the Grizzlies make light work of the Raiders defeating them in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-16.

Morrow would respond again later in the day with another double-double, her second of the day and second of the season, this time in a five-set win over No. 12 ranked Eastern Wyoming. Butler fell behind 2-0 in sets with a 25-18 and 25-20 loss. They battled back, having to go into extra points 26-24 to win the third set.

They answered the call yet again in the fourth winning 25-19 and finished it in the fifth 15-6. This was the Grizzlies first match of the season to go past three sets. They have yet to play a four-set match now, nine matches into the season.

Sydney Morrow closed out the weekend with 32 kills and a .350 HIT%. She totaled 36 digs seven aces and four blocks. Caitly Rexroat posted 24 kills and 37 digs with three aces on the weekend. Sophomore Jaryn Benning added 22 kills and 28 blocks with five aces and three blocks. Sydney Hefty led the team in digs throughout the weekend tallying 50. Lara Sosa finished with 55 set assist, 24 digs and six aces while teammate Jessie Nibarger had 47 assists with 19 digs.

NEXT UP: Butler (7-2, 2-1) will get back on the road on Monday, February 8 as they head to Dodge City for a 6:00pm match with the Conqs. They will play at home for the first time this season on Thursday, February 11 at 6:30pm versus the Seward Saints.

NOTES: 7-2 is the best start the Grizzlies have had since the 2012 season where they won 16 of their first 18 games and went on to finish 31-7 overall.
