Grizzlies score 21-runs and give up zero taking first two from Scotties

Butler improved to 10-1 on the season after taking games one and two from the Scotties of Highland on Thursday in Topeka, KS.

Butler outscored the Scotties 21-0 on the day and the pitching core of Butler gave up just three hits in the 14-innings played.

"I thought we played well today," said head coach BJ McVay. "In all facets of the game we were effective today. We pitched it really well, hit it well and scored runs."

Game one saw Dillan Janak start on the mound where he did not disappoint. Janak pitched six innings allowing no runs off one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts.

It was a tight game through the first six innings as Butler was holding just a two-run lead. Both pitchers were keeping the batters at bay. The lid opened up in the top of the seventh for the Grizzlies as they rattled off eight runs in the inning to close out the game.

Butler finished game one with nine hits and left eight on base. Dylan Werries finished three of four with three RBI's a walk and a triple. Bryce Zimmerer was three for four with three runs scored and two RBI's. Colby Standard finished with two RBI's while Brandon Ryan and Thomas Beiswanger each had one.

Coming off a no hitter last week, Izack Tiger got the start in game two. He was close to another as he pitched five innings allowing no runs off one hit. He walked four and struck out two. Tiger improves to 2-1 on the season.

Easton Conard threw the sixth inning forcing three ground balls for a quick bottom of the sixth. John Short closed out the game in the seventh striking out one and forcing to fly outs.

A Josh Cameron RBI single in the first got things started for the Grizzlies. Colby Standard hit a sac fly in the third scoring Jackson Syring. Brandon Ryan and RJ Lara each had RBI singles to give Butler a 4-0 lead after three. 

The fourth inning saw another four runs scored for the Grizzlies with RBI's from Dylan Werries, Austin Portner and Brandon Ryan. Butler now held an 8-0 advantage over the Scotties.

Butler would have an empty inning in the fifth but would respond with a run in the sixth off an Austin Portner RBI single and two in the seventh with RBI singles from Syring and Werries.

Conard and Short closed out the game in the sixth and seventh allowing no hits or runs and the Grizzlies picked up their tenth win of the season on a 7-inning run rule.

Dylan Werries had a great day at the plate going 3 for 3 in game two with two runs scored, two RBI's, a walk and two doubles. Josh Cameron finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He stole five bases in the game. Austin Portner added two RBI's and two runs scored. Brandon Ryan finished with two RBI's in the game while Jackson Syring, Colby Standard and RJ Lara each had one.

Butler (10-1, 0-0) will host games three and four of the four-game set with the Scotties on Saturday, February 29th at McDonald Stadium in El Dorado, KS at with the first game starting at 1:00pm.
