Butler softball swept the conference weekly honors for the first week of the 2016 season, as sophomore outfielder Megan Wurts and freshman pitcher Regan Mergele were named the KJCCC Division I Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Wurts, a sophomore from Olathe, has batted .538 for the season, with a hit in all seven Butler games. She has averaged two hits per game, including six doubles and a triple. Wurts also has driven in seven runs, averaging an RBI per game and has stolen nine bases. She has a .643 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage.
Regan Mergele, a freshman pitcher from San Antonio, Texas, has been the pitcher of record in five of Butler's first seven games. She is 4-1, with the lone loss being in relief in extra innings against No. 15 Midland. She has a 0.73 ERA, allowing just two earned runs in 19.1 innings while striking out 22 and walking just five.
Butler, ranked sixth nationally, is 6-1 overall on the season. The Grizzlies will play four games in Weatherford, Texas this weekend.
