Grizzlies take two in Oklahoma

The fifth ranked Butler Grizzlies continued their scorching start to the season, racking up two more wins with a series sweep on the road at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, beating the Mavericks 1-0 in the first game before finishing the sweep with a 7-1 victory in game two.

Game One

It was, yet again, the Emma Koenke show in the first game, as the freshman pitched a complete game, pitching a shutout and giving up only one hit in seven innings of work, striking out 11 of the 22 batters she faced. The freshman improves to 6-0 on the season, and she has now gone 21 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

The game was a pitcher's duel to the very end, as Butler could muster up just one run on two hits. Ari Cordova was the difference maker for the Grizzlies, as she hit a solo home run in the fourth inning in what would prove to be the decider.

Game Two

The bats returned for Butler in the second game, as they pushed seven runs past the plate on nine hits. Butler placed three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to break the game open. Madi Young hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot, and Cordova picked up three hits and an RBI to help the Grizzlies to the win.

The Grizzlies were again dominant on the mound, as three pitchers combined to shut down the Mavericks. Allyson Montgomery picked up her third win of the season as she pitched three innings, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out six. Kendal LeGrand and Ariel Matula combined to pitch four innings of shutout softball in relief to close out the sweep.

Butler improves to 10-0 on the year, as they'll look to continue the unbeaten season, as they start conference play at Pratt with two games on Wednesday against the Beavers.
