Softball Posts 3-1 Weekend in Texas

LUFKIN, Texas – No. 15 Butler softball traveled to Lufkin, Texas, and took on Monroe College in a single game and Angelina College in three games, all played at Lady Roadrunner Softball Field.

The Grizzlies (7-1) went 3-1 on the weekend, winning 12-4 on Friday over Monroe and 17-9 over Angelina. On Saturday the Grizzlies suffered their first loss of the season, 12-11 to Angelina but were able to come back and earn an 8-5 win in the doubleheader.

Game 1: Butler 12, Monroe College 4

Monroe got off to a hot start offensively, plating four runs in the first inning. That was no matter for the Grizzlies as a four-spot in the first inning and six late runs in the sixth inning helped them to a 12-4 run rule victory in six innings.

Addy Ewing (W, 2-0) came on in relief for Butler, tossing the final 4.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits. She struck out four and walked none helping the Grizzlies get the win.

The Grizzlies scored the 12 runs on just seven hits as they were aided by seven Monroe errors. Claire Lopez had two hits, a walk and an RBI. Kyrsten Moran scored twice as well as having a hit, run, RBI and a walk.

Game 2: Butler 17, Angelina College 9

Butler plated a season-high 17 runs on a season-high 18 hits in a high flying 17-9 win over the host Angelina Roadrunners.

The Grizzlies made their presence felt immediately, scoring seven runs in the top of the first. They also used four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to aid in the offensive explosion.

Ewing (W, 3-0) once again earned the win for Butler in the circle, tossing 3.2 innings allowing three runs (two earned), striking out three and walking one. Lena Walter threw the final 2.0 innings allowing a lone run on three hits.

Cady Dickey tallied three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. She hit a three-run home run in the first inning to put Butler up 3-0. Chloe Cardona added three hits, Moran had two, Mallory Young had two, Yepez had three and Schoenfeld had two to round out the multi-hit performers. Yepez drove in five runs including a two-run home run in the fourth to give Butler a 9-8 lead.

Schoenfeld had three stolen bases.

Game 3: Angelina College 12, Butler 11

The first day on Saturday turned out to be another offensive battle but Angelina got the upper hand winning 12-11 to hand Butler its first loss of the season.

The Roadrunners used a six-spot in the sixth to take an 11-8 lead. Butler countered with three runs in the seventh as Dickey launched a two-run home to tie the game at 11-11. Angelina walked the game off in the seventh to get a 12-11 lead.

Dickey drove in five runs on five hits as well as scoring two runs. Lopez had three hits and three runs scored while Yepez had three hits. JaKeyla McDaniel had two hits and two RBI.

Chloe Odle (L, 2-1) was saddled with the loss as she allowed eight runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings on 11 hits. She walked eight and struck out three. Walter threw the final 1.1 allowing four earned runs on four hits.

Game 4: Butler 8, Angelina College 5

Butler closed out its Texas trip with an 8-5 win over the Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon.

Once again, the Grizzlies scored in the first inning, this time with two runs. They scored two in the first and two in the seventh to secure the victory.

Cheyenne Handsaker (W, 2-0) threw a complete game allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits, striking out six and walking one.

Four Grizzlies had two-hit games in Yepez, Kaylah Newman, Cardona and Schoenfeld. Caylee Mann had two RBI to lead Butler.
