Softball Pair Takes Home KJCCC Weekly Awards

Butler softball duo Cheyenne Handsaker and Caylee Mann swept the KJCCC Softball Players of the Week awards, the conference announced on Tuesday.

The duo helped the Grizzlies to a 6-0 week with three conference doubleheader sweeps on the road at Barton, Seward and Northwest Kansas Tech. Butler is now 32-6 overall and 20-2 in league play.

Mann, a freshman infielder from Edmond, Okla., earned the first weekly honor of her collegiate career. Mann led the team in hits, doubles, RBIs, total bases and slugging %. In five games started and six games played, Mann hit .611, slugged 1.056 and had an on-base percentage of .632. She had five doubles, 11 hits, 11 RBI and just one strikeout. Mann had four multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games, including a three hit, two RBI performance in a 5-4 road win at Seward. She had the game winning hit/RBI in that win at Seward in the sixth inning. Mann also helped the Grizzlies to a win over Barton previously that week, driving in three runs in the first game. She finished with 30 putouts from her first base position.

Handsaker, a sophomore pitcher from Pearl City, Il., racked up her fourth weekly recognition from the league this season. Handsaker picked up two wins on the week and also made an appearance in relief as the Grizzlies went 6-0. In a 16-5 win over Barton, she started and threw 4.2 innings allowing one earned run, striking out five and walking one. In a start at Seward, she picked up her second win striking out eight and walking one, allowing two earned runs on six hits in a complete game 7.0 inning effort. She ended the week with 14 strikeouts to three walks and a 2.86 ERA in three appearances.
