Butler can't hold late lead in overtime loss to Garden City

Garden City overcame a late deficit to force the Butler women into overtime on Wednesday, with the Broncbusters eventually beating the Grizzlies, 57-53, in the Jayhawk West Conference opener for both teams.

Butler led for most of the contest, including a 24-22 lead at halftime. Riding the hot shooting of freshman Samantha Saterlee, who hit four 3-pointers in the second half, the Grizzlies built to as many as seven points, leading 49-42 with 2:22 to play.
The Grizzlies, however, went cold from that point on. Garden City scored the final seven points in regulation to send the game to overtime tied 52-52.

Then, in the overtime, Butler could score only one point on a single free throw, as the Grizzlies missed all six shots from the floor in the extra period. Garden City scored just five points of its own, but was enough for the win.

Butler was led by Jamillah Bonner, who had 22 points to lead all scorers. She also hauled in 13 rebounds for a double-double. Satterlee was the only other Grizzly in double figures, finishing with 12 points, all on 3-pointers. The next leading scorer was Jordyn Tolefree with five.

Ashley Walker had 21 points to lead Garden City while Tamara Jones had 13 points.
Butler drops to 11-4 on the season, 0-1 in Jayhawk West play. Garden City improves to 9-6 overall and 1-0 in conference. Butler is off this Saturday and is in action next Wednesday at undefeated Hutchinson at 5:30 p.m.
