Sophomore class inks with NCAA schools

EL DORADO, Kan. -- Butler women's head basketball coach Mike Helmer recently announced that all four of his sophomores have signed national letters of intent with NCAA schools. Carly Bettencourt (Quincy University - NCAA Division II), Jamillah Bonner (Wichita State University - NCAA Division I), Tysia Manuel (Oral Roberts University - NCAA Division I) and Samantha Satterlee (Lincoln Memorial University - NCAA Division II) have each inked with their respective schools.

Bettencourt, a native of El Dorado Hills, Calif., averaged 6.2 points and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 42 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free-throw line for the Grizzlies this past season. Bettencourt was also named to the Region VI All-Tournament team.

"I am very thrilled for Carly to continue her career as a Lady Hawk," said Quincy University head coach Jeni Garber. "Carly is a floor leader and communicates well. She can push the ball, has excellent court vision and makes the players around her better. She will add experience and depth to our guard position."

Bonner, a local Wichita product, averaged 16.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game during her two-year Butler career. In addition, Bonner leaves Butler as one of the most decorated players to ever dawn the Purple and Gold. Bonner's 1,086 points and 215 steals are the most all-time in school history, whiler her 525 rebounds place her second on the all-time list. In recognition of her efforts, Bonner was a two-time All-Conference performer, two-time All-Region VI performer and Butler's first ever WBCA NJCAA All-Star. With Bonner's signing, Wichita State's recruiting class was elevated to No. 47 nationally, according to Blue Star Basketball.

"I believe (Bonner) is a program-changer in how she plays and the tempo at which she plays," Wichita State head coach Jody Adams said. "I've never, in the past few years, seen anyone play on both sides of the ball and leave it out there every possession like she does. In doing that in our system, she could be the most decorated junior college player to leave Wichita State in two years. She has phenomenal speed and leaping ability. She is a fighter and has an edge."

Manuel hails from Marietta, Okla., and averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while tallying 1.2 steals per contest. In addition, Manuel shot 50 percent from the field and 70 percent from the charity stripe. Manuel's defensive prowlness was key to the Grizzlies' success, as she often drew the opponent's best player.

"We are excited to acquire a player with Tysia's comprehensive defensive toughness," said Oral Roberts University head coach Misti Cussen. "Ty can be a defensive stopper against athletic power forwards that we face, but I also believe her game is going to continue to blossom offensively as she learns our system. I believe she has received two great years of coaching there at Butler, and we expect her to step into our program with maturity and focus, helping us to repeat our NCAA Tournament appearances over the next two seasons."

Satterlee is from Junction City, Kan., and averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field, including 35 percent from long range and 77 percent from the free-throw line. Satterlee finished third all-time at Butler with her free-throw percentage.

"I am impressed with Samantha in a variety of ways," commented Lincoln Memorial head coach Roger Hodge. "She carries a 3.7 grade point average and her classroom intellect carries over to the basketball floor. Samantha is a very smart player. Her ability to play physical on the interior and to be a lights-out shooter from beyond the arc gives her a unique combination of skills that fit our system nicely. Adding Samantha Satterlee to this class helps us continue to address our needs for a shooter with range and a physical presence on the inside. The 'Splitter Nation is going to love how she plays and I expect her to have an outstanding two years at LMU."

The four sophomores helped Butler to a 26-7 record during the 2012-13 campaign and compiled 44 wins in their two-year careers. They also helped set new Butler marks in individual career points (Bonner, 1,086) and steals (Bonner, 215), most points in a game (115), most field goals in a game (48), most team steals (506), most rebounds as a team (1,414) and most conference wins in a season (12).
