No. 14 Butler women dominate at Coffeyville, winning 84-49

Coffeyville, Kan. – The Butler women finished off the first week of Jayhawk East play with a lopsided victory on the road over rival Coffeyville by a score of 84-49 at Nellis Hall on Saturday. 

Butler's 19th win was never really in doubt as the Grizzlies came out and opened up a 13-point lead by the midway through the first half, thanks in large part to a 14-2 run. The dynamic sophomore duo of Te'era Williams and Ashlee Ivy carried the Grizzlies in dominating fashion much of the first half. Ashlee Ivy caught fire connecting on all five of her 3-point attempts in the half while Te'era Williams locked down the inside attack for the Grizzlies making seven of her first eight shots from the floor. Williams and Ivy combined for 36 points in the first half while holding Coffeyville to only 21 points. The Grizzlies pushed the lead to as many as 24 points at the intermission, 45-21.

The second half proved to be much of the same for the Grizzlies who used a 16-0 run beginning from the 15:48 mark to the media timeout which occurred with 9:48 left in the contest.  Much of the second half damage came courtesy of the freshman tandem of Ashley Gibson and Teanna Reid who together combined for 27 points in the second half alone, just one point less than the 28 points the Red Ravens had in the period.

For the game, the Grizzlies 48 percent from the field, including 55 percent from 3-point range and connected on 86 percent of its free throw attempts. Defensively, the Grizzlies held Coffeyville to 30 percent shooting from the field, and 15 percent from 3-point range.

Te'era Williams scored a game high 27 points and had 10 rebounds. This was her 11th double-double effort of the season and her 11th game of 20 or more points. Williams has scored in double figures in all 20 games this season. Also scoring for Butler was Ashlee Ivy and Teanna Reid who each had 15 points, Ashley Gibson 12, Alli Heimerman five, Shayla Williams and Terryuana Godwin had four points each, and Kynadi  Johnson had two points.

With 17 consecutive wins – the second longest streak in school history - No. 14 Butler improves to 19-1 on the season and sits atop the Jayhawk East standings at 2-0. The Grizzlies begin a two-game conference home stand beginning on Wednesday night against Allen County and then home again on Saturday against Labette. Both tip times are slated for 5:30pm.
