Butler women again dominate defensively in 74-29 win

The Butler women's basketball team used another dominating defensive effort to stay undefeated in Jayhawk East Conference play on Saturday, as the Grizzlies beat Labette 74-29 at the Power Plant.

It is the second straight game in which the Grizzlies have held an opponent under 30 points, on the heels of a 103-28 win over Allen County on Wednesday.

Butler started the game on a 17-1 run, keyed by a pair of 3-pointers by Ashley Ivy. Her third 3-pointer of the first half would key another Butler surge toward the end of the half as the Grizzlies would lead 40-12 at the break.

The 12 points allowed tied for the fewest points the Grizzlies have allowed in a first half this season and is the second lowest allowed in any half this year behind the 11 points surrendered in the second half against Allen County on Wednesday.

Butler then doubled up Labette in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 34-17 for the final 45-point margin.

Ashlee Ivy led Butler in scoring with 21 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Te'era Williams scored 16 points, continuing her streak of scoring in double digits in every Butler game this season. Teanna Reid had eight points, Ashley Gibson had seven, Terryauna Godwin had six, Shelbe VandeBerghe had five, Alli Heimerman had four, Shayla Williams had three and Chelsea Hodison and Kynadi Johnson had two apiece.

Butler is now 21-1 on the season and 4-0 in Jayhawk East Conference play. The Grizzlies have won 19 straight, just one shy of the school record for consecutive wins in a season. Butler will next play on Wednesday at Independence.
