Butler women finish season sweep of Allen with 69-43 road win

IOLA, Kan. – For the first time in a conference game this season, the Butler women were unable to build a 20-point halftime lead, but still were never challenged in a 69-43 road win at Allen County on Saturday.

With the win, the Grizzlies stay unbeaten in Jayhawk East Conference play at 7-0 and are 24-1 overall with 22 consecutive wins.

Butler scored the first seven points of the game and were up 13-1 before Allen made its first field goal more than four minutes into the contest. Butler would hold Allen scoreless for an eight-minute stretch later in the first half as part of a 9-0 run. At the half, the Grizzlies had doubled up Allen with a 38-19 lead.

But the Grizzlies certainly weren't as dominant as they were two weeks earlier in a 103-28 win over Allen County at home. Butler did push the lead past 30 once, when a steal by Ashley Gibson turned into a layup by Teanna Reid that made the score 64-33 with 5:40 to play.

The 69 points Butler scored are the lowest output in a conference game, five fewer than in a 74-29 win against Labette on Jan. 25. It is only the second time in seven conference games that an opponent has come within 30 points of the Grizzlies. The other was an 82-58 win over No. 19 Cowley in the conference opener.

Butler was led by Teanna Reid with 17 points while Ashlee Ivy had 12 and Alli Heimerman had 10. Terryuana Godwin scored nine and Chelsea Hodison scored eight. Ashley Gibson scored five points, Katie Andersen had three, Shayla Williams and Bethany Howard had two apiece and Elayna Spilker scored one point.

The Grizzlies have a short turnaround to play a 5:30 p.m. home game on Monday against Coffeyville. That is the rescheduled date for a game originally postponed from last Wednesday due to weather.
