Nero leads Grizzlies to first conference win of season

The Butler women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season and first KJCCC win with a convincing 86-56 victory over Colby Community College Wednesday night at home.

"I am really happy with our performance tonight," said head coach Mike Helmer. "After our performance last week and not having any scrimmages this preseason, I was happy with how we came out tonight."

The Grizzlies have now won 17-straight matchups with the Trojans with their last loss dating back to February 18, 2011 when they fell on the road 59-58.

Freshman Kaylee Nero really caught the attention of those watching as she went for a game high 18 points and nine rebounds, both career highs for the freshman from Oklahoma. She was also a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

Skyla Knight filled the stat sheet with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals on the night. Paris Mullins chipped in 12 points and six boards while Cymirah Williams posted a season and career high 11 points and eight rebounds. Tamara Nard finished with 10 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and six points.

Butler didn't shoot the ball overly well connecting on 45% of their shots but held their opponent to just 29% from the floor. Colby also struggled from deep connecting on just 3-20 from outside and 17-32 from the free throw line. The Grizzlies outrebounded the Trojans 48-29 and came down with 20 on the offensive glass.

NEXT UP: The Grizzlies will travel to Dodge City on Saturday, January 30 for a 1:00pm tip with the Conquistadors.

NOTES: 17-straight win over Colby. This marks the 276th win for Coach Mike Helmer as the head coach at Butler.
