Former Grizzly Sherrone Moore Named 21st Head Coach at University of Michigan

Former Butler football offensive lineman Sherrone Moore was named the 21st head coach of the Michigan Wolverines on Friday, the university announced. Moore takes the reigns of the winningest program in college football history.

Moore, a Derby, Kan., native, served as the Wolverines' interim head coach for four games during the 2023 national championship season. Most notably he led Michigan to wins over No. 9 Penn State and No. 2 Ohio State as head coach Jim Harbaugh served a suspension.

Harbaugh left Michigan following the national championship as he accepted a position as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL. After serving as interim head coach for four games this season, it was an easy decision for the Michigan brass to promote Moore. He is the first African American to lead the Wolverines in their 134-year history.

The head Wolverine spent two seasons in El Dorado (2004-05) under the tutelage of Butler Hall of Fame coach Troy Morrell. Moore, Cincinnati Bengals head coach and former Butler quarterback Zac Taylor and the 2004 Grizzlies finished 11-1 and were national runners-up. In Moore's time at Butler, the Grizzlies won two KJCCC championships, going 20-3 in the two-year span. He was a second team All-KJCC selection in 2004.

Moore was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2023, given to the nation's most outstanding coach. His first three seasons in Ann Arbor (2018-20) he served as tight ends coach before moving over to coach the offensive line the next three seasons. Moore was named co-offensive coordinator in 2021 and took over the sole offensive coordinator position in 2023 as well as coaching the offensive line, the only coach in the Power 5 to do so.

Following Butler, Moore transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he played in 2006 and 2007. He played in 14 games at offensive guard and helped the Sooners win two Big 12 Championships and played in two BCS bowl games.

Moore has had coaching stops at Louisville (2009-13), Central Michigan (2014-2017) and Michigan (2018-present).
