DRAGONS NAIL 13 3-POINTERS IN TOP 15 WIN OVER BUTLER

The No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team hit 13 3-pointers and had five players score in double figures as the blue Dragons defeated No. 15 Butler 104-95 in a Jayhawk Conference contest on Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons improved to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Grizzlies drop to 9-2 overall and 4-2 in league play. Hutchinson travels to defending national champion Coffeyville on Wednesday.

Led by sophomore guard Angelo Stuart, five different Blue Dragons hit 3-pointers as Hutchinson connected on 13 of 24 3-point attempts. The 13 treys tied for the second most 3-pointers in a game this season.

Stuart tied a season high hitting 5 of 8 from distance for a game-high-tying 24 points. Stuart, who was 6 of 11 shooting overall, also had three assists and three rebounds to lead the Blue Dragons.

Sophomore Nate Goodlow snapped out of a shooting slump with a pair of 3-pointers and 9 of 10 shooting from the free-throw line to finish with a season-high 19 points. Goodlow also had four assists and two steals.

Freshman Cecil Lee posted season highs of three 3-pointers and 17 points with six rebounds. Freshman Kobe Campbell tied his season high with 17 points. Freshman Josiah Harris had 11 points (two 3-pointers) and nine rebounds, both season-high marks.

The Blue Dragons shot 48.6 percent (34 of 70). Hutchinson also went 23 of 28 from the free-throw line. The Dragons out-rebounded Butler 38-31 with 20 offensive rebounds that led to a 23-10 advantage in second-chance points.

Butler was led by Marque English's 24 points, hitting 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Eden Holt added 22 points after hitting 3 of 3 from distance. Keyon Thomas scored 17 points and Treylon Payne added 14.

The Grizzlies shot an opponent-high 54.2 percent from the field (32 of 59), hitting 8 of 16 from 3-point range and 23 of 29 from the foul line.

The game had seven lead changes and four ties, all coming in the first half.

The Blue Dragons trailed 21-17 with 10:15 to play in the first half and went on a 11-2 run powered by 3-pointers from Harris, Lee and Goodlow for a 28-23 lead with 6:54 to play in the half.

The Blue Dragons didn't relinquish the lead from that point. The Dragons led 34-28 after two Stuart free throws with 4:59 to play in the half. Harris' second 3-pointer of the half boosted the Dragon lead to 44-34 with 3:20 remaining. Butler went on a small 6-3 run to pull within seven, but Campbell nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first half with Hutchinson leading 55-45.

A 6-0 Hutch run capped by a Harris three-point play boosted the Hutchinson lead to 65-50 with 16:49 to play. Butler then went on an 18-8 run over the next 6:31 and pulled within 73-68 with 10:18 to play after an English layup.

Lee stopped that run with a three-point play. Lee then added a 3-pointer and Goodlow had two free throws as Hutchinson rebuilt a 12-point lead at 91-79 with 5:58 to play.

The Grizzlies pulled within 98-91 with 1:29 to play, but a 6-2 run by Hutchinson – a layup and two free throws from Campbell and two Stuart free throws – closed out the win for Hutchinson.

GAME NOTES – This was Hutchinson's fifth 100-point game of the season. … The Blue Dragons are now 126-67 against Butler, including 66-21 in Hutchinson. … This was the first 100-point game vs. Butler since a 106-point outing on December 7, 2016. … This was Angelo Stuart's ninth 20-point game of the season, the seventh in a row.
