WINFIELD, Kan. – Butler men's and women's cross country continued their strong season on Saturday at Kansas Veterans Home as the men's squad won the Region 6 Preview and the women took second at the event hosted by Cowley.
Freshman Emmanuel Otim took first (23:12.01) in the 8000m on the men's side while freshman Elizabeth Hernandez took fourth in the 5000m (17:34.89) on the women's side. Otim's time was a personal best this season and he has won three of four events he has raced this season. Hernandez also ran a personal best this season.
The event served as a preview for the Region 6 Championships as it is run on the same course. The Region 6 Championship will take place on Oct. 25th and will be Butler's next time out.
Butler had five men finish in the top-15 of the event in Otim, Itumeleng Ngxabazi (7th, 24:26.07), Sfiso Makolomakwa (9th, 24:33.17), Ishmael Acheampong (13th, 24:49.45) and Bhekizulu Khumalo (15th, 25:13.26).
The women saw three finish in the top-15 with Hernandez, Zothile Jesica Mbhamali (10th, 18:28.02) and Alison Unruh (12th, 18:57.09).
