Softball Takes 2 From Colby

COLBY, Kan. – Butler softball made the long trip out to Colby and earned a doubleheader sweep of the Trojans at Carl Adams Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Game one was an extra inning affair with the Grizzlies (22-6, 12-2) winning 4-3 in eight innings. The Grizzlies defeated Colby (12-16, 8-6) 8-0 in five innings in game two.

Butler is back on the field on Saturday, traveling to Liberal for a set at Seward with first pitch at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Butler 4 Colby 3 (8 inn.)

Colby used three sixth inning runs to force extra innings but the Grizzlies ultimately prevailed.

A Claire Lopez RBI single up the middle that scored JaKeyla McDaniel proved to be the game winning run in the top of the eighth. Lopez paced Butler with two hits and two RBI.

Cheyenne Handsaker threw a complete game with only one earned run on five hits. She struck out a career-high 12 and walked just two.

The Grizzlies managed four runs on just four hits. Alivia Darbe drove in two runs, one on an RBI single and one on a sacrifice fly.

Colby's starting pitcher Mia Rauzi threw 7.1 innings allowing three earned runs on three hits. She walked eight and struck out one.

An Avery Newmiller two run home run in the sixth inning gave Colby a 3-2 lead. Down to their last at bats in the seventh, Darbe lined out to center field to score Lopez and tie the game. Handsaker got two strikeouts in the seventh to push the game to extra innings.

Game 2: Butler 8 Colby 0 (5 inn.)

Butler got the offense going in game two, plating seven runs across the first three innings.

Chloe Odle (W, 8-4) and Addy Ewing combined for a shutout. They held the Trojans to just three hits.

Aly Hageman finished with two hits and three RBI and Claire Lopez had her second straight two hit game.

Madison Montgomery and Aly Hageman each ran their home run count on the season to eight. Montgomery hit a two-run home run in the second to make it 4-0 and Hageman hit a two-run home run in the third to make it 6-0.

The Trojans used three different pitchers.
